Genesis 5
Descendants of Adam
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.
2 He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.
4 Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters.
5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.
6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and became the father of Enosh.
7 Then Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he became the father of Enosh, and he had other sons and daughters.
8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.
9 Enosh lived ninety years, and became the father of Kenan.
10 Then Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years after he became the father of Kenan, and he had other sons and daughters.
11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.
12 Kenan lived seventy years, and became the father of Mahalalel.
13 Then Kenan lived eight hundred and forty years after he became the father of Mahalalel, and he had other sons and daughters.
14 So all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.
15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Jared.
16 Then Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Jared, and he had other sons and daughters.
17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.
18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and became the father of Enoch.
19 Then Jared lived eight hundred years after he became the father of Enoch, and he had other sons and daughters.
20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.
21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah.
22 Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters.
23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years.
24 Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and became the father of Lamech.
26 Then Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years after he became the father of Lamech, and he had other sons and daughters.
27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died.
28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and became the father of a son.
29 Now he called his name Noah, saying, "This one will give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the LORD has cursed."
30 Then Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years after he became the father of Noah, and he had other sons and daughters.
31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died.
32 Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

This Sunday's weekly reading comes from Genesis 5. This book goes more into depth into the geneology steming from Adam from the point of Seth being born. For some reason I find all of the ages at which each male fathered a child and the age at which he died interesting, so I have posted this information below.....
Adam: at 130 years he fathered Seth. Died at 930.
Seth: at 105 years he fathered Enosh. Died at 912.
Enosh: at 90 years he fathered Kenan. Died at 905.
Kenan: at 70 years he fathered Mahalalel. Died at 910.
Mahalalel: at 65 years he fathered Jared. Died at 895.
Jared: at 162 years he fathered Enoch. Died at 962.
Enoch: at 65 years he fathered Methuselah. Died at 365 years.
Methselah: at 187 years he fathered Lamech. Died at 969 years.
Lamech: at 182 years he fathered Noah. Died at 777. (<--- interesting ?) Noah: at 500 years he fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (were these triplets or are we under the impression that one year in BC time actually was longer than a 365 day period ?) At first I thought it was interesting how each person down the line would die earlier and earlier. I wondered if this had to do with the whole 'separation from God--less of life' thing, but I guess that was squandered when I got to Jared who died at 962. ? v. 22 Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters.
?: In the geneology of births and passing aways this is the first time the text states that someone 'walked with God' in regards to their life. Previously the text would just say 'such and such lived such and such years'.
v. 23-24 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
?: There's that reference again to 'walking with God' as opposed to 'lived'. Also, the text states 'he was not, for God took him' as opposed to just saying he passed away.
v. 29 Now he called his name Noah, saying, "This one will give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the LORD has cursed."
?: Now this verse is easily referencing back to Genesis 3:17-19. In terms of Noah, does Lamech 'just know' that Noah will do a great thing because in most "prophetic" happenings in the bible we are told the person was advised by an angel, the holy spirit, or God himself.

as far as the Genesis passage dealing with the ages, this is a difficult one with many accepted views depending on the scholar you read. i especially like your question about noah and his sons...i've never even thought of that and will have to look into that more.
as for Enoch, it's not that he lived or died and it is stated in a different way. it's because of the way he lived. Hebrews 11:5 talks about him living by faith and being pulled into heaven so as to not know death. this is interesting because thus far there has been relatively little contact between God and man but apparently Enoch had a relationship with God unknown by the other inhabitants of the planet thus far. so in reality he did not die; he was simply taken into heaven by God. if only i could know that kind of relationship.
when it comes to the birth of noah and his name meaning "rest" being purposefully given by his father is sure. lamech sounds as if tired of the toil and looking for rest. this might mean that he's glad to have a son that can help him in the family business, be it agriculture or something else. however, it is probably a word from God given to lamech as to the purpose of his son's future. we cannot say anything for sure because this is the only reference to the birth of noah and every commentary has a different explanation.

Your first question had me going for a minute. Unfortunately, at this time I can only respond to one ?
?1. Did Noah have triplets? Maybe, but probably not. Ok, then what do we do with Noah was 500 years old and he became the father of S,H&J? I think the author is moving the story along for us here. He is getting us to the birth of Shem. So, the text could read Noah was 500 years old and at some point in the future he had three sons. We are not tied to the sons having been born within the same year. In fact, I think we can deduce that Shem at least was not born in the same year as his brothers. Here goes my arguement:
The first premise is that Shem was not the eldest even though he is mentioned first. He IS the main player in the story, and I do believe that that is why he is first. Some have suggested that Japheth was oldest, then Shem then Ham. I have found little to verify this. HOWEVER, whether the order of the brothers is correct or not is not too important here.
Next, Noah was 500 here, and he was 600 at flood. This gives 100 hundred years for him to have sons who were aged enough to walk on the ark. Thus, sons could have been born within this time frame.
According to how I have quickly (so I may need some rechecking)calculated the flood period, I estimate that 7 to 13 or so months have past. Thus, the Bible says in the 601st year of Noah, they came off the ark.
There is a list of children for Japheth, Ham and Shem. Shem is the ONLY one that gives his age in the list of his kids. His first child was born 2 years after the flood. And he was a 100 years old. Fits perfect.
Therefore, Shem could have been born in year 502 of Noah's life. That is if Noah began to have children at 500 and had 100 years until the flood to have children. Then, Japheth would have proabaly been born in 500 (or the Bible would have said whatever year Noah began to have children),Next, Shem born in 501-2 and Ham sometime later.
Working backwards, if Shem was 100 at the birth of his first child, and this was 2 years after the flood then Shem was 98 at the flood (add 2 for 100 years old, which means born in the 502nd-ish year of Noah's life).
Fun question. Hard too. Hope this helps and hope it is clear enough.

?2 Why did they live so long and what is the cause behind their rapid decrease in years lived?
I have heard all sort of interesting theories. Mine. I have not the slightest clue. They were sinners and died.
?3 What's up with Enoch?
I hate to spoil a good story, but I think the same thing will be said about Noah. The difference, Enoch was taken and Noah had to die. Enoch is for sure the epitome of one who "walked with God" and had such a deep intimacy with God. WOW
?4 Did Lamech prophetically know something about "Noah" and rest?
I think it is in part what Adam said. Lamech would get some physical relief from this son. Therefore, it would be a natural thing to know this son would be able to help him out. If I remember though, kids were not necessarily named at birth as they are now. They would display a characteristic and that would become their name. What about "Saul"? His name means "the one asked for". Obviously, this is in reference to Israel asking for a king. The question is, when did he acquire the name? Well, we don't know, but possible he was known by another name until this time and changed his name. Now, the Bible does not say that he was known by another name, so we need not make assumptions. But the practice of name changing was known (Abram->Abraham; Sarai->Sarah etc.) So, maybe "Noah" was called something else until he began to help his father, and his father was able to get some rest. It was such a big deal that this boy became known as "Rest"
I do think it is interesting that the author decided to tell us this tid bit. As for its significance, I am at a loss.
